Built by Colonel Glover just after the Revolution, on the site of the original Three Cods Tavern. The home sat quite a distance from the street, as Glover had a large lawn and garden in front of the house. Glover hosted many meetings, dinner parties and quiet contemplation for the Patriots of Marblehead and beyond during his early years in the home. There were two large posts as one entered the grounds between which a beautiful golden eagle was suspended. Long after Glover’s death, the mansion began to be called the “Eagle House,”. “Eagle House” was built as a showcase mansion of it’s day, and still remains one today.
Glover was one of the many Marblehead patriots during the Revolution. Although he had many accomplishments, he was best known as Colonel of his own regiment who generously used his own funds to help equip his soldiers with clothing, food, and ammunition. In addition, the Colonel was a merchant and also the older brother of the celebrated Gen. John Glover.
